Sensitivities

In the middle of the night last night, I woke up because I smelled smoke. That's a weird, troublesome feeling. I'm glad to know that the smell of smoke wakes me up, though.

I guess the neighbors had some friends over, so they lit a fire in the fire dish in the backyard, which tends to send smoke straight into my bathroom window, where it wafts throughout the apartment and eventually into my bedroom. This is the second time that's happened. I shut the window and went back to bed. Whenever anyone smokes out on their front balcony, the cigarette smoke wafts into my living room, and I have to go over and close the doors to that, too.

One person in my office section (room with six cubicles) seems to like to frequently externalize his internal monologue. I learned from him that the loud vibrating noises from the first-floor construction are from someone using a hammer drill to drill through concrete, which they seem to be doing right below me today. Neither element lends itself well towards concentrating, even with headphones on, but I should accept my own fair share of the blame on that front anyway.

I suppose I could go somewhere else to try and get work done. The external monitor and keyboard are hard to give up, though, and it's also useful to be able to haphazardly check in with other people in the lab.

And really, it's still a large general improvement over my desk in the lab in Texas, although I still have to dig out a scarf and arm-warmers occasionally, because this office space runs on the cold side for no apparent reason other than "wacky old building problems" (ergo, construction).

It doesn't help that I still don't like this manuscript I'm revising, because I still think aspects of the experiment were flawed.

It was sufficiently labor-intensive and context-specific, so I don't think I'll have a chance to do it all over again any time in the near future, though. If I do, however, you can be certain I have some good ideas as to how to improve it dramatically, and get way more out of the data collected.

I have The World's Loudest Fan, I should mail it to you, because antagonizing neighbors is what I do best.

Only if it blows _warm_ air! ;-)
