A few more photos, and a few more stories

My friend R got action shots of us on both Saturday and Sunday!

Tandem in action, day 1
Too scared to take my hands off the tiller

Tandem in action, day 2
Day 2 - pirate hat started to feel infernally heavy, so I removed it after 10 miles

Crossing the Columbia River
sytharin got an action shot as we crossed the Columbia River!

Crossing the St. John's bridge
She also got a cool snapshot as we crossed the St. John's Bridge into Portland. That's the tandem in the background.

Octopus hat and portrait
Hard to come up with a caption that does this photo full justice. RAC's good friend R created this beautiful painting several years ago, and gave it to my parents. You could call it "Inspiration for RAC's helmet accessory," but that's not entirely accurate. Maybe it's more that RAC has been fated to have an octopus on her head.

Pirate crew at the pre-ride dinner
I feel like this pre-ride photo, from R, captures the spirit of things really well.

Things we heard while riding:

"He's making his wench do all the work!"*

"Passing on your port side!" (one guy on a recumbent tricycle in particular picked up the proper lingo after my dad used it on him a couple of times)

From a guy on a classic-looking bike, about 12 miles from the finish, "I saw you guys at the start, and I thought, 'Those guys are never going to make it."

"He's not pedaling!!"

"Why aren't you singing??!! More singing!"

*Or another common variant substituted "wife" for "wench", which was creepy. I guess people have pretty strong notions of who rides together on a tandem.

I was all set to say that the cutlasses were the best, but I was wrong! That portrait and the subsequent hat are the best!

Aren't the portrait and hat just amazing? I have such a phenomenal younger sytharin. :-)

I love these photos! So excellent to see the documentation of your adventures. The one of you and your dad with his cutlass brandished is my favorite, but they're all wonderful.

It was nice to have other people taking photos this go around, so I could shamelessly plunder the good ones. I was so busy I only managed a few! And I, too, love that particular one. :-)
