Two-for-one specials and vegan indulgences

Yesterday evening I went out for food and drink for the first time in Berkeley. First, our lab went to a brewpub called Jupiter, which has a lovely patio, including this flaming fountain:

All-in-one fountain at Jupiter

The beer was good, and so was the beer-cheese fondue with big hunks of roasted garlic in it.

Then, because that wasn't enough, I walked around the corner to Saturn to meet up with sytharin, L, and assorted friends, to help celebrate L's birthday.

Saturn is one of those rather unhealthy vegan/vegetarian diner places (although they did serve up ample salads). Due to some miscommunication with our server, we eventually wound up with a plate of "Frachos" - french fries dressed up as though they are nachos, complete with vegan cheese, black beans, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, and jalapenos. Rich.

It made me think back to all the visits to Carney's, in Texas. The notion of opening up a can of beans was too much for the Texans; the best we vegetarians could get would be a grilled cheese sandwich with American cheese, or chips and queso, or fried dill pickle chips. I would often find myself eating a regrettable amount of fried stuff, because that's all there was.

Urgh, yeah, biking in Wyoming is pretty much adventures-in-grilled-cheese-sammiches. Sometimes there's a just cheese pizza.

Hmm, Wyoming sounds a lot like Texas or Montana, then. In Texas I figured out how to survive, eventually (carrying my own burritos, holding lots of potluck dinners). That makes it funny to be in one of these vegetarian-happy hippie towns, where I just think, "You people have it so easy and you don't even know."

I've found vegetarian restaurants in texas and montana by just wandering around. It was hard to even find a pizza joint in rural wyoming. It was all diners and steakhouses. Yeeergh.

I do NOT miss the fried veggie food at Carney's... But I do miss their fish tacos. Thems were goooood.

If only I ate fish, alas! Do you remember what kind of fish they used?

Yeah... Those fries were just too much. I like Saturn's soups for when i want to socialize but not gorge, but the heaps of appetizers make it difficult not to indulge.

Mmm, and they were such tasty appetizers!

I like this notion about the soups. I also liked the big heaping salad I got. The rest of the menu made me think, "Hmm, this sounds like something that would taste good after a long brevet, but right now it makes me feel a little nauseous."
