Today's errands:

-Main El Cerrito post office so S could pick up a package.

-Bikes to the bike shop. I've run out of steam for figuring out why I'm having derailleur issues with the Jolly Roger, so I had a mechanic at Missing Link spend some time with it. He managed to improve things, but I think he's right, that the 10-year-old-plus derailleur is pretty tired. I'll swap on the brand-new one sometime when I have more time and energy for the project. In the meantime, I'm glad it's better.

-Trip to the fabric store. I have a pair of pants that need a new zipper. After buying a replacement at the fabric store (only $1.50), I realized - I also have several pairs of worn-out jeans with perfectly good zippers in them. I also got supplies to fix the snaps in my helmet's headband. Stonemountain has some interesting fabric categories:

-A couple of clothing items and small saucepan to Goodwill.

-Ace Hardware. Two small fluorescent tubes, to replace two tubes that have burned out.

-El Cerrito Recycling and Environmental Resource Center. Ace doesn't collect burned-out fluorescent tubes, so they referred me to the Environmental Resource Center instead. It had been on my agenda to head there for a visit anyway, and I was impressed by what I saw. Now I know where to take the books I don't want anymore.

-Then to Trader Joe's for garlic and Sriracha barbecue sauce. Crazy busy in there. Also, Lucky, for peanut butter and butter-butter. I shopped while hungry, so I came home with a big tub of peanuts and another big tub of ice cream, too. Whoops.

And now I am at home, staring at various repair projects. I've figured out why the small portable CD player won't work. A tiny chunk of plastic that depresses a lever when the cover is closed must have broken off when a bunch of the CDs and the discman crashed around in the back of the moving truck. So I should be able to figure out a repair. I've also been wondering, lately, about the possibility of repairing the CD device in the boombox. Amazingly, there's a service manual for it online! I probably just need to clean the lens, but it's going to take some supplies-gathering to do even that part. We shall see.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get more actual repair done.

fabric always looks great in the fabric stores, when I bring it home not so much.

I wonder if the effect is similar to something that happens in painting, where the perception of color is very much a relative thing, such that one often has to mix and then actually dab a color onto the canvas to see whether it's the right color for the context. Fabric stores are full of color (and probably carefully well-lit).
