Foodie moment [Friday bike ride]

This morning, sytharin and I visited Fournee Bakery, which is basically at the base of the historic Claremont Hotel and Spa on the border between Berkeley and Oakland. So, a posh neighborhood.

The croissants did not disappoint. My smart-o-phone camera, however, disappointed mightily:

RAC had two savory treats, a savory croissant and cheese puff. I tried their almond croissant and also had a Meyer lemon croissant with little almondy bits mixed in. Everything was buttery and flaky and on the crisp side.

Also, here's a thing that I prefer about west coast bakeries over actual French bakeries: way more whole-wheat and sourdough available. This place wasn't selling whole-wheat croissants (I haven't looked for or found any out here), but they had beautiful loaves of whole-wheat bread. Scrumptious.

They were next door to a Pete's Coffee, which presented RAC with a dilemma. She'd forgotten her mug (oh the shame!), but wanted a caffeinated beverage. Pete's had ceramic mugs, but they're owned by Starbucks*. Fournee had this amusing sign posted in the window that says "coffee is available":

but they did not have any "for here" containers whatsoever.

I didn't ask the bakers whether the drip coffee that they were selling was shade-grown, organic, or fair-trade, but I did think that the bakery wouldn't score high on our father's scale.

Still, 'twas a nice Friday morning treat.

*Edit, based on updated information: Peet's is NOT owned by Starbucks. However, they are still a large chain business.

coffee "for here"
Establishments that don't serve coffee in ceramic mugs, "for here", have become exceedingly rare in Seattle. I have encountered just one coffee stand in more than a year where that was the case. Seems like Berkeley might have some catching-up to do.

Interesting! And yeah, I think there's a lot of "to go" culture in this area. To some extent it may have to do with how much rent costs and what people perceive as needed to stay in business (very high sales volumes).

Whoa, Peet's is not owned by Starbucks. They got bought by a German investment firm fairly recently, and they are definitely moving in a more Starbucks-ish direction but there remain pretty big differences between the two. Sorry if I sound defensive :) I'm married to a former Peet's employee and they started in Berkeley (now hq'ed in Emeryville).

Thank you for the clarification!! I didn't *think* RAC was correct about that - I know that Charbucks owns Seattle's Best - but obviously I didn't know any better than what she'd said.

Regardless, I have some appreciation for Peets being involved in the general spread of knowledge about good espresso!

Hah, I wonder what the equivalent scoring system would be for tea. Organic is definitely nice, but shade-grown is a flavoring thing that I only occasionally want, heh. Local is kinda awesome (I know one place up in the Skagit valley that grows their own white tea) but unfortunately it's not particularly good... I like the concept more than the execution.

Hmm. Well, I would think about it based on the overall agenda with my dad's coffee rating - he's interested in focusing on coffee that is produced as sustainably as possible, so he awards a point if the coffee is shade grown or organic or fair trade. I suspect fair trade could be an important point for tea as well as coffee. The whole reason to choose shade-grown coffee is to promote the maintenance of bird habitat, so something comparable could apply to tea, perhaps? Although it would be harder to judge because there isn't quite the same sort of standard for the tea industry.
