Simple pleasures

Strawberry flowers forever

The strawberry plant in the foreground is the Mara des Bois strawberry, which has some ripening, reddening berries. The one in the rear is some variety of wild strawberry, type unknown, that I germinated from seed in Nebraska. Some of the other yard strawberries have been ripening already, but the slugs tend to get them and they aren't particularly inspiring berries. At some point, it would be interesting to do some comparison tasting.

Multiple tomato plants have their first flowers going. For me, the earliest flowers have tended to abort, but they're a promising sign nonetheless. They are all happily growing, with nice, thick central stems.

sytharin found the first ripe raspberries today. The blueberries will start ripening very soon. I want her to get some blackberry cane from MW, who made an amazing blackberry pie a few Thanksgivings ago, using a variety of blackberry that came from his brother (?) in Oregon. It can take multiple years to get fruit-bearing plants established, and I'm so grateful to be here at the point where things are literally reaching fruition.

Meanwhile, I am harvesting a grip of rhubarb once every two weeks, then slicing it up and shoving it in the freezer. The carrots, cabbage, and lettuce have also been fantastic, and the greens will keep going for a bit longer yet.

Follow-up from the bulk tea order: I'm addicted to the Stash red rooibos chai tea. It's a great all-day tea.

Re: 'tis the season!
It appears that it's always the season for something in sunny California! I'll take it, I suppose. :-)

Ach, true, true. We can't do much about the fire aspect, but are doing what we can to minimize water consumption overall. Man, that makes me miss Texas, just an eentsy-teensy little bit. They're doing much better in terms of drought these days...perhaps a little too well...

Re: 'tis the season!
Yeah, this caused me to check the US Drought Monitor, and most of the country is in reasonable shape right now...except for central to southern California. Personally, I don't plan on living here long-term. Philosophically I just don't think it's sustainable.
