New Orleans

Hey LJ folks - I am heading to New Orleans for a conference soon, but have most of the first day free. Know of good coffeeshops to hole up in, or good places to pick up some groceries during my stay? We have a wee space in the French Quarter so as to be within walking distance of the conference.

The two people I do know who could answer no longer frequent LJ, alas.

Hang on, we've got this. [grin]

Mayhem recommends Verti Marte; I like Rouse's better but they're more of a haul from the Quarter. Way bigger selection, though. Rouse's is my favorite grocery store in New Orleans... I mostly went to their #46 store.

Coffeeshops: I like Envie but they don't have the most seating. Right in the Quarter, though. And there are bunches of PJ's, Community Coffees, etc. that are New Orleans local chains which are generally nice. Mojo is also a favorite, cash only, but probably outside of where you are likely to be.

If you let me know where you are staying, or where the conference is, I can probably give you more detailed recommendations or consult my local New Orleanian.

Well rock on. Mayhem was third on my list of NO people who would know stuff.

I thought you would have good ideas - thank you! We're staying near the intersection of Bienville and Dauphine, and the conference is at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. I see that the Rouse's #46 isn't TOO horribly far away, so I'll try and visit that.

I suppose the strip of park to the north of that area is a highly touristy region?

New Orleans friend of Erika's here who got pointed over this way (and of course there is overlap with other disparate friends?) - I agree with thewronghands' & Mayhem's suggestions - I like Verti Mart for poboys and deli and snacks, and the Rouses in the CBD on Baronne isn't too far away. (Maybe there is a Rouses in the Quarter? Don't know.) I'm not usually at cafes in the quarter, but would highly recomend getting out of the FQ for at least a little bit of your trip, if you can.

My favorite hole-up-and-write coffeeshop is Monkey Monkey, which would be across town from you but actually not far from the Canal/Carrollton streetcar stop. That'd put you right over by Juan's Flying Burrito for dinner, too, or Angelo Brocato's for cannoli and gelato. In the FQ, I'm with thewronghands on Envie, especially for people-watching. If you take the St Charles streetcar around town, then there's also Rue de la Course and Zotz on Oak (my neighborhood coffeeshops). Rue's usually full of people at their separate tables working on laptops, Zotz is ...cozier and less worky.

Oooh. You're also not far from The Roosevelt, which has Domenica in it, which iirc has some amazing happy-hour specials on fancypants delicious pizzas. And St Lawrence is a bar/pub on N.Peters that's open late and serves generally very tasty food...but if I start giving restaurant recs this is going to get much longer quickly.
