Dear architects,

Please stop building those giant monolithic condominium buildings that house those now generic glass-walled first floor commercial spaces that inevitably get filled by restaurants called "Bowl" or "Soup" or "Marinara." (actually, none of them will be called "Marinara" because none of them will house an Italian restaurant - not sufficiently hip).

Fast casual dining is depressing. So is the gastropub concept, with too many overpowering beverages and dishes of chopped-up things that rotate through the menu so quickly that they're gone before there's a chance to sort the good from the mediocre. No more hardware boutiques, please, or plant shops specializing in cacti, air plants, and succulents ripped from California hillsides.

What's to be done instead? Stone, adobe, straw, packed earth? I know we can't get too vertical with those materials, especially not in earthquake-prone regions. Can we fix bricks?
