Thought experiments

While absent-mindedly reading more news headlines about the latest maneuvers in the international trade wars, I had a sudden thought: What if all these tariffs and counter-moves slow down global trade and encourage more local production/consumption patterns?

I recognize that a lot of news sources, businesses, and economists are shrieking right now about how this nonsense is going to cripple the US economy. But I also had to think - even if these tariffs are put into place for bad and terrible and irrational reasons, maybe there's an actual silver lining if the net effect is a reduction in fossil-fuel burn rates.

Weird.

I mean, I doubt that's exactly what will happen, but still.

The larger point is: these processes aren't rational, they never have been, and sometimes a counter-think is useful. And don't buy into the headline hysteria.
