I tried to go to the DMV this morning. Having now been in a bunch of different DMVs/MVDs/etc over the last several years, I can tell you that New York has its act together. They have a fantastic online system to help ensure that people show up with all the correct documents, and let you schedule a time to come in so you aren't stuck waiting in queues for ages. Also, the office is less than 2 miles from home - talk about convenient.

Me, on the other hand, well, I did a pretty good job of being prepared, but managed to forget one small detail: there's a law that the driver's license that you surrender must be more than 6 months old at the time you apply for a NY license. I got my most recent AZ license in early February. Sigh.

So I guess I'll be going back in two weeks.

For comparison:

-Arizona was lickety-split fast, but then again, I didn't get a RealID, just a fake one. Still, no lines there, thanks to that crazy rule that your license won't expire until you turn 65.

-California makes you re-take their state written exam. I actually strongly approve of this element. But there were also some incredible long lines at that DMV office, even if you had scheduled things in advance, even well before the office actually opened.

-Nebraska was fine. My experience there is forever colored by having been in a rough patch with S at the time, and barely being able to keep it together for the license photo. It was in a part of town that was somewhat complicated to reach by bicycle.

-Texas was a long wait. Their online information wasn't clear about what specific paperwork would be required in person, and the office was on a weird, marginal edge of town 9 miles from where I lived that was unpleasant to bike to. And since their online information wasn't clear, I didn't have a crucial piece of paperwork that was required, so I had to go there twice.

-From what I remember from a long time ago, Washington was fine, too.

Arizona Real ID
FWIW, got my Arizona ReadID couple of weeks ago. Super convenient as just do app online and appointment, brings docs, get pix and pay fee. Jim Duncan

Re: Arizona Real ID
Nice! Yeah, I only realized that I should have done that AFTER I'd already gone in. I'm glad to hear they made the process straightforward.
