Complex emotions

I first heard this song last year when a friend posted it, and it promptly got stuck in my head. It seems appropriate to post today, in recognition of cultural clashes experienced in this country during this time of year. I don't know the best way to simultaneously experience gratitude and Thanksgiving while also experiencing the National Day of Mourning of Native Americans, but both are on my mind.

So is this job application I need to finish. Urgh.

Yeah, that's about where I am too. I really like the idea of a holiday about gratitude... I just don't want it to be tied to being given things by a patriarchal deity, or taking them from Native Americans because hey colonialism and manifest destiny. I want a gratitude and kindness day that isn't at anyone's expense.

Well, that's the thing about the US: the folks who set the country up weren't all very nice. We don't have a myth of a just ruling house (the idea that a country's rulers descend from somebody with a legitimate right to rule). So our holidays are something of a mixed bag.

If you want something different, I guess you'll just have to make up a holiday, then. :)

Aye, 'tis what I was thinking of! :)

But seriously -- since I can't keep up the accent ;) -- somebody invented National Day of Mourning of Native Americans, and apparently at least a few people pay attention to it (n = 2 :) ).
