Rage

So. Just as things were starting to seem civilized. The gas guy turned on the gas so I could cook. Two hours later the smell of gas was strong enough that the girls next door called 911 and we had to evacuate (only faint smells in my unit). In the midst of the whole ordeal, I wound up meeting the former occupant of my unit, who had lived here for five years until the health problems associated with leaks and mildew caused her to leave.

I feel somewhat like a fool for renting here, but how could I have really known without having insisted on meeting other building tenants in advance. The former tenant did think I'd be fine for the six months I'm here and spoke fondly of her memories of the place.

Leaks and mildew...
So ... it seems to me that whomever you are renting from ought to assume some responsibility for these difficulties... Gas line leak especially needs to be repaired! Correctly!

Supposedly, the gas man found the leak and repaired it and turned gas service back on to my apartment. But if you don't hear anything from me in the morning....

It's probably as fixed as he could get it. It's embarrassing for the utility when "fixed" gas lines cause explosions... for values of "embarrassing" equal to "huge out-of-court settlements". :P

If it doesn't stay fixed, by all means, keep calling the gas company, and if they say it's the landlord's problem, call them.

I was still smelling faint gas odors 2 hours after the gas man left, but didn't smell anything in the basement ( where the firefighters detected the highest levels) and smells are gone as of this morning. Agreed, I would think the gas co. would be embarrassed by even the present set of events, given the expense of calling out 4 fire trucks and a response unit.

I suspect the firefighters are going to remember me as That Crazy Bleach Lady, although for having just moved here I was able to get a lot done fairly quickly (manager contacted, upstairs tenant contacted, access to the extent I have access...).

You should get out. I know today you are wanting to stay, but you should get out. Sincere bad feeling over here.

I'm being careful to document everything. From what I've seen, it's hard to get anything under a 6-month lease in anything but a dilapidated and sketchy place around here. This place IS month-to-month, so if things are still really bad at the end of February I'll look around again and will relocate STAT.

Lots of sucky elements, but it's still not as bad as the transition to Texas.
